I was taking Pastel lessons at St. Joseph’s Abbey in Covington, Louisiana. Before my long drive back to Mississippi I was in the habit of walking my Service Dog around the vast property and taking photos for reference for future paintings. One brilliant Spring afternoon the Azaleas were in full
bloom and I took a multitude of photos.
I usually begin a pastel painting using hard Caran d’Ache pastels and washing them in with 91% alcohol. Once the underpainting is dry I proceed with the medium values of soft pastel and will finish up with my softest pastels in the palest values.
