Woman in Red

Hilo is well known for two things, rain and the beloved Merrie Monarch Festival. During the annual festival parade, I always look forward to the Hawaiian pa'u riders (women on horseback). In this painting, I was impressed with the brilliant gown and headpiece and of this rider as she passed by. I was inspired to compose a painting with the beautiful costume colors contrasting against the gloom of the overcast skies.
