Weathered Sentinel

While hiking near Angel Peak in Northwestern New Mexico late one afternoon, I came across this ancient juniper. It literally stopped me in my tracks. The massive size of the tree, its twisted form, the warm afternoon light illuminating its branches... I couldn't help but wonder how many years had it stood there? The weather, hot and cold. What changes had occurred during all that time?
